Seven-time world champion sees his two-year reign at the top come to an end as he crashes out at The Crucible
Snooker superstar Ronnie O’Sullivan has seen a significant drop in his world ranking following an unexpected defeat at The Crucible. O’Sullivan has captivated fans new and old once again in the sport during recent years, undoubtedly driving an increase in streams for big events. However, this setback could prove a huge blow to his standing.
O’Sullivan, fondly known as ‘The Rocket’, was widely expected to clinch an eighth world title at the World Snooker Championship. However, he was defeated in the quarter-finals by Stuart Bingham earlier this month, who secured a remarkable 13-10 victory.
This loss not only ended O’Sullivan’s hopes for another world title but also led to his fall from grace in the global rankings. Kyren Wilson eventually emerged as the Crucible winner, reportedly bagging £500,000 in the process.
O’Sullivan’s defeat resulted in him dropping down to fifth place in the world rankings after holding onto the No.1 spot for two years consecutively. Mark Allen has now taken over as number one, with Judd Trump, Wilson and Luca Brecel also surpassing O’Sullivan to secure spots within the top five.
O’Sullivan made headlines during his time in Sheffield for more than just his performances on the table. He revealed post-exit that he had considered skipping The Crucible altogether before being persuaded by a sponsor to participate.
Furthermore, he suggested several changes that could be implemented for future editions of this showpiece event synonymous with The Crucible venue itself.
Among these suggestions is speculation about moving this prestigious event overseas which has stirred up conversations within the snooker community.
