Shortly after Harvey Chandler had emerged victorious in the EBSA Men’s Snooker Championships, it was announced that Simon Lichtenberg had been awarded a tour card for his win in the Under 21s.

Thank goodness for common sense

Lichtenberg had initially thought to have missed out due to the National Federation for snooker in Germany (the DBU) refusing to join the World Snooker Federation (WSF) in time for the championships. However, common sense has prevailed and not allowed politics to stand in the way of the progression of this young sportsman.

The WSF got together with EBSA and decided that due to the “exceptional individual circumstances of this case”, Lichtenberg should be awarded a 2 year tour card to compete on the World Snooker Tour beginning in the 2018/19 season.

It is hoped that the DBU will now join the ever growing list of WSF member federations in the interests of amateur players from Germany. The full statement can be seen on the WPBSA site here: https://www.wpbsa.com/wsf-news-simon-lichtenberg-awarded-tour-card/
