Amateur Scottish Snooker events taking place alongside the Scottish Open 2018

The World Snooker Tour is in Glasgow for the Scottish Open, part of the Home Nations series, from 10-16 December at the Emirates Arena.

Alongside the professional event there are two amateur events taking place in the same arena. The similarly named Scottish Open Final featuring Ross Valance and Gary Thomson, and the Masters Open Final featuring Craig MacGillivray and Gary Kinnear.

Both events are scheduled for 1pm on Friday 14 December – the same time as the quarter finals of the main event.Craig MacGillivray will also feature in the main event as one of the two Scottish Snooker wildcards.

MacGillivray will face David Gilbert and the other wildcard, Fraser Patrick, will face Chen Feilong of China.

There are another 5 amateurs in the main event as top ups. David Lilley; Adam Duffy; James Cahill; Dechawat Poomjaeng and Luke Simmonds. Poomjaeng and Simmonds have been drawn against each other!

These five have earned their places by virtue of their rankings from the last Q School.

Round 1

What a great showing from the amateurs! Three of the seven have progressed through to round two and there were notable performances amongst the losers.

Craig MacGillivray was first up and faced 17th seed David Gilbert. They shared the first 4 frames before Gilbert took the last two, but MacGillivray certainly “didn’t embarrass” himself as he said on Facebook, and must be looking forward now to Friday.

Fraser Patrick was beaten in the deciding frame by Chen Feilong and Adam Duffy also lost in a decider to John Higgins. This was the 1000th match won in Higgins’ career.

The match up of two amateurs Luke Simmonds and Dechawat Poomjaeng saw Simmonds run out a 4-0 winner.

David Lilley continues his impressive season with a fine 4-3 win over Tom Ford. As you have probably seen, Ford reached the semi finals of the UK last week where he was beaten by Ronnie O’Sullivan.

There was another good win for James Cahill, this time beating Thor Chuan Leong 4-2 and finishing the match with a break of 99.

Round 2 is played out today and top billing must go to David Lilley as he faces Mark King in front of the Eurosport Player cameras.

Round 2

Once again David Lilley was flying the flag for the amateurs when he beat Mark King [seeded 25] and was the only amateur to make it through.

James Cahill was beaten by Zhang Yong [69] and Luke Simmonds was beaten by Yuan Sijun [61] in the decider after battling back from 3-0 down.

Round 3

Another creditable run from David Lilley was halted at the hands of Ali Carter [16].
