Knowles’ run halted by Fry

The veteran Tony Knowles is bidding to return to the main tour but Raymond Fry put paid to those hopes – for now.

Knowles was 3-1 up after breaks of 69 and 54 but Fry hit back with 110 and 67 before taking the deciding frame. No doubt all eyes will be on Knowles in Event 2!

Relegated pros Brandon Sargeant and Riley Parsons also had their first attempts to regain their tour cards thwarted by fellow relegated pros Ian Burns and Peter Lines respectively.

Michael White, the favourite to earn a tour card from this event, beat Ben Fortey 4-1 to set up a mouth watering clash with Lines.

The match between Robbie McGuigan and Harvey Chandler was always going to be interesting and went down to a respotted black which was claimed by Chandler.

The second half of Round 3 will be completed today as will Round 4 (Last 32). Tomorrow will see 4 players earn their cards for the next 2 seasons on the tour.

Those players will be withdrawn from Events 2 and 3 handing their opponents a bye. As most, if not all, of the winners will be seeded players, it means the one’s receiving byes will skip Round 2. I can’t see any good reason why the draw for Event 2 can’t be done the moment the results are known for Event 1 – same at the end of Event 2.

Interest in this year’s Q School seems to be more than usual. Is this just because of the easing of restrictions allowing snooker to start up again in the UK?
